Bouquet Subscriptions / Flower CSA
From Together We Bloom,
Flower Farm in Ogden, Utah
CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture and it’s a business model that many small farms use. It works like this:
You, a community member, financially commit to supporting our farm by paying for your produce in advance. Once you make that financial commitment, you are considered one of the ‘CSA Members’ for the year and generally are eligible to enjoy additional benefits.
The prepayment helps the farm afford the farming expenses- the seeds, supplies, equipment, and labor required to grow the produce.
Then, when it is time for harvest, CSA members get their share of the produce that their prepayment helped the farm afford to grow.
We call our Flower CSA our ‘bouquet subscription’, but really, it is so much more than just a subscription. It is an investment in the future and viability of our small farm.
What does ‘CSA’ mean?
How does the Bouquet Subscription help our farm?
Because we are a relatively new farm, we are still trying to build a profitable, long-term business.
Behind each bouquet is the (thousands) of seeds that we start by hand in our basement, the preparation of the soil and planting of them in our field, time spent weeding and feeding our field, labor paid for, irrigation ran, time spent harvesting them, transporting them to our cooler, and then making bouquets.
Unfortunately, if after all of this work, the bouquets that we make don’t sell, we don’t get financially compensated for the months of work we put into the farm.
For this reason, the subscription allows us guaranteed pay for bouquets BEFORE we make them and it allows us to build a more resilient business than if we are making bouquets that may or may not sell.
What are the benefits of becoming a CSA Member?
There are additional benefits to becoming a CSA member (besides the flowers!)
